New York freelancer wins America’s Best Summer Job
VAIL — Benjamin Solomon, of Brooklyn, New York, was selected as the winner of America’s Best Summer Job in Vail. After collecting the most votes during the first phase of the contest with more than 9,000 votes, Solomon won over the judging panel, which reviewed the top 10 candidates. More than 87,000 votes were cast for the 67 contestants who entered the contest, which launched in March.
“Benjamin’s ability to capture the most votes during the video contest was just the tip of the iceberg for what the judging panel believes he is truly capable of,” said Davy Ratchford, of the Vail Local Marketing District Advisory Council, and marketing director for Vail Mountain. “We are excited to welcome Benjamin to Vail this summer as he explores our mountain playground and shares his experiences with the world.”
Working His Way Up
Although this will be Solomon’s first summer in Vail, his familiarity with the area can be attributed to the time he spent working on his degree at Colorado College in Colorado Springs. Solomon completed his Bachelor of the Arts degree in drama with minors in English and film and moved to New York City to start his career as a writer. Solomon was an associate editor at Next Magazine and quickly worked his way up to editor-in-chief of the publication where he stayed for four years. Now, Solomon freelances for outlets such as http://www.VanityFair.com and http://www.Traveland Leisure.com.
“I am so grateful to everyone who voted and helped me land this once-in-a-lifetime job,” said Solomon. “I honestly still can’t believe I’ll be spending the summer in Colorado! I’m excited to show the world around the Vail Valley and make some more fun — and probably embarrassing — videos along the way.”
Work Hard, Play Hard
This summer, Solomon will live, work and play in Vail as he takes on America’s Best Summer Job. He will share his experiences through the Vail.com blog, various social media outlets, video and more. Solomon will stay in a different lodging property each week, such as The Four Seasons Resort Vail, The Sebastian – Vail, Vail Mountain Lodging, The Antlers and Eagle Point. He’ll also participate in events such as the GoPro Mountain Games and KEEN Vail Kids Adventure Race, zipline down Vail Mountain, review restaurants throughout Lionshead and Vail Village, as well as host happy hour events, work in the Welcome Center and more. His adventure beings the week of June 2, when he takes part in the Outside Adventure Film School during the GoPro Mountain Games.
Solomon will provide content to the official Vail blog that serves both Vail Resorts, the town of Vail, summer events and every other business in the community for summer. The official Vail Facebook, YouTube and Twitter channels also will become very active with his musings. America’s Best Summer Job runs June 2 through Aug. 10, so look for posts about Solomon’s adventures beginning in early June.
Those units are all deed-restricted, meaning that only people who work an annual average of 30 hours per week can live there. That keeps the apartments out of the short-term rental pool and available to local residents.
