Obituary: Phoebe Kubby Utter Barrett
– February 27, 2026
Phoebe Kubby Utter Barrett, 87, passed away on February 27, 2026 leaving behind a legacy deeply woven into the fabric of Colorado’s mountain communities.
Born in Lake Geneva,Wisconsin, Phoebe felt the call of the mountains early in life. In her twenties, she made her way west to Aspen where she became a ski instructor and embraced the spirit of the Rockies. It was there she met her first husband, Dan Kubby, beginning a life shaped by adventure, resilience, and love for the alpine world.
Phoebe later settled in Vail with her second husband,
Jay McKay Utter. Together, with Walter Kirsch, they built the beloved Vail Racquet Club across the Frontage Rd in East Vail from their home, creating a gathering place that became part of the heart and soul of the Vail community.
When the State of Colorado invoked eminent domain to construct I-70, the house was carefully moved and relocated to the Vail Golf Course, becoming one of the very first homes established there. After Jay’s passing, Phoebe honored his legacy by building Shrine Mountain Inn with her partners — a place that reflects her deep reverence for the land, history, and mountain culture she cherished so dearly.
Phoebe later married Bob Barrett. Together they hosted the many breakfasts and evening cocktail parties at her house on the Vail Golf Course, that were a staple of the Jerry Ford Invitational Golf Tournament, which Bob helped establish in Vail. Throughout her life, Phoebe carried herself with quiet strength, grace, and generosity.
A true mountain pioneer, Phoebe loved to ski, loved the high country, and loved the community she helped build. She embodied the spirit of the Rockies — resilient yet gentle, adventurous yet grounded. She will be remembered always for her kindness, her elegance & grace and the warmth she extended to everyone she met.
She is survived by her children, Shayne & Eric , and her grandchildren McKay & Danielle.
She was a beautiful soul, and her presence will forever echo in the mountains she loved.
