Prep notebook: Eagle Valley Nordic ski team wins Spring Gulch skate race

Huskies girls basketball team wins fifth-straight game with 34-25 victory over Sailors

The Eagle Valley boys Nordic ski team took the team title at the Colorado High School Ski League meet in Spring Gulch on Wednesday.

Tyler Blair covered the 5-kilometer skate course in 15 minutes, 53.3 seconds to claim a 7-second win over Summit’s Carter Niemkiewicz as the Devils tallied 210 team points. Summit’s four scoring skiers scored 205 to place second while Poudre (198) rounded out the podium in third. Jonah Barber and Jack Sargent also skied into the top-10 in the 67-skier field to help the Devils secure the victory. Vail Mountain’s Teddy Brunner had his best race of the year, finishing third overall to help the Gore Rangers place eighth as a team. Kai Skellion took eighth to guide Battle Mountain to a fifth-place finish.

On the girls side, Vail Mountain School’s Isla Elton was the top local finisher. Elton finished in second, 16 seconds behind Summit’s defending state champion Ella Hagen. Bella Williams finished in seventh to guide Battle Mountain to a second-place team finish as Lake County won for the second-straight meet. The Gore Rangers were fifth and the Devils were eighth in the girls team scoring.



The Nordic calendar continues on Jan. 25 with a 7.5-kilometer skate at Snow Mountain Ranch.

Meanwhile, Battle Mountain’s Eden and Ruthie DeMino went 1-2 in Friday’s Alpine race at Beaver Creek. Eden Demino posted a two-run giant slalom time of 2:11.40 as her older sister finished just under two seconds back. Keena Shikverg placed 10th overall as Battle Mountain won the girls team title with 170 points.

Gracie Cohn placed eighth to lead Vail Mountain School to a fourth-place team finish and Eagle Valley was led by McKinley Packert, who finished 28th overall. Steamboat Springs took the boys team win as the Huskies came in fourth, led by Sebastian Anderson’s 10th-place result. Vail Mountain’s Sawyer Johnson was the top local finisher, placing third for the Gore Rangers.

The Alpine circuit travels to Winter Park for a slalom on Jan. 24.

Basketball notes

  • The Eagle Valley boys basketball team had its 8-game winning streak snapped on Thursday as the Devils fell to No. 15 Evergreen 72-63 at home. The No. 11 Devils (11-3) host No. 3 Lutheran on Saturday.
  • The Eagle Valley girls fell to Evergreen 47-28 on Thursday in Gypsum. Ella Webster led the Devils with eight points in the loss.
  • The Battle Mountain boys fell to Delta 63-46 on Thursday. Blake Roberts scored 14 points and Charlie Strauch pitched in nine for the Huskies, who fell to 3-5 on the year.
  • The Battle Mountain girls won for a fifth-straight time on Thursday, taking down Steamboat Springs 34-25 at home. Elle Glendining went 6-for-9 from the field, dropping 13 points in the win as the Huskies improved to 8-4.
