Prep notebook: Vail Mountain School advances in 4A boys state lacrosse tournament after first-round overtime win
The Gore Rangers defeated Mullen 10-9 behind Erik Jaerbyn's five goals

No. 10 Vail Mountain School defeated No. 23 Mullen 10-9 in overtime in the first round of the 4A boys lacrosse state tournament on Wednesday. The Gore Rangers scored four fourth-quarter goals to send the game into an extra period before Jay McCormack knocked home the game-winner in overtime.
Erik Jaerbyn led the team with five scores. Charlie Vidal chipped in three more and Jack Schwartz and also tallied a goal for the Gore Rangers, who improved to 10-5 in the win-or-go-home situation. Evan Sapp added three assists, Weston Roach went 10-for-18 on face-offs and Teddy Johnson made seven saves in the victory.
As the higher seed, Vail Mountain was set to host Tuesday’s first-round game, but weather forced organizers to move the contest to Mullen. The Gore Rangers advance to face No. 7 Northfield on Friday at 5 p.m. in Denver. A free livestream of the game is available on fan.hudle.com.
Soccer notes: Montrose ends Eagle Valley’s season with 3-0 win
No. 1 Montrose scored two second-half goals to defeat No. 32 Eagle Valley 3-0 in the first round of the 4A girls soccer state tournament on Wednesday.
The Devils were making their first state tournament appearance since 2017. Undefeated Montrose moves on to face No. 17 D’Evelyn while Eagle Valley ends its season with a 7-5-3 record. The Devils finished second in the Western Slope this year with a 6-2-1 league mark.

Baseball notes: Battle Mountain drops doubleheader to Summit
Battle Mountain fell to Summit 8-0 and 5-2 in a doubleheader Tuesday, ending the Huskies three-game winning streak. After a 5-4 win over Eagle Valley on April 29, Battle Mountain defeated Steamboat Springs 15-2 and 12-2 last Saturday.

The Tigers scored three runs in the top of the sixth-inning in the second game to pull away. Franco Moreno, Jack Reed and Jaxon Hansen each had two hits and Sutton Dodds pitched five shutout innings for the Huskies in the loss.
Battle Mountain (5-11 overall, 4-6 league) hosts a double-header against Rifle on Saturday before wrapping up the season at Longmont on May 14.
Eagle Valley fell 18-6 to Glenwood Springs on Wednesday. The Demons mustered eight runs in the top of the fifth as Grady Aguirre went 2-for-5 with four RBI from the plate. Jack Robinson led the Devils offensively, going 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
The Devils finished their season with a 7-14 overall record and 4-8 league mark.
