Skier, 50, dies of heart attack

Staff Report

A 50-year-old Oregon man died of an apparent heart attack Wednesday while skiing on Vail Mountain.

Daniel Doltar of Bend, Ore. was reportedly skiing Morning Side, an expert trail in Vail’s Back Bowls. Vail Ski Patrol brought him off the mountain and took him to a waiting ambulance. He was taken to Vail Valley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead that afternoon.

Eagle County deputy coroner Sue Franciose said an autopsy was scheduled Thursday to accurately determine the cause of death. She said Doltar was skiing with a group from the Jimmy Heuga Center, the local nonprofit organization that seeks to help multiple sclerosis patients.

Franciose said autopsy results would likely be released Friday or Saturday.

Wednesday’s death was the fourth on Vail Mountain this year and the third caused by heart attack.
