Summit skier makes history on day 1 of CHSAA alpine ski state championships in Vail

Summit’s Seth Montgomery became the first three-time giant slalom state champion on Wednesday. The Tiger senior won the event for the third year in a row on the first day of the CHSAA Alpine ski state championships at Vail Resort, posting a two-run time of 1 minute, 36.63 seconds — more than a second better than two-time runner-up Joshua Stephen of Aspen.

Summit put three skiers in the top-5, while Vail Mountain sophomore Colin Kaneda was the best local finisher in 10th. Luca Goldberg led Battle Mountain’s nine qualifiers in 18th while Wyatt Thuon and Tage Terbush both finished in the top-30 for Eagle Valley.

The Tigers dominated the girls races as well, sweeping the top-4 spots and putting six skiers in the top-8. Sophomore Malie Dieterich (1:37.97) parlayed the fastest first run to a 0.04-second win over teammate Mackenzie Cross. Battle Mountain’s Ruthie DeMino — who captured a silver medal in the event last winter — sat in third after the first run but couldn’t finish the second. A similar fate fell to her teammate, Mia Eaton, who posted a DNF after placing fourth in the first trip down Golden Peak.

Montgomery — who swept both Alpine races the last two years — now has five state titles, two more than any other boys skier in history, according to CHSAA. Toby Scarpella of Durango (2020 and 2022) and Sands Simonton of Battle Mountain (2014 and 2015) also won the GS title twice.

Althea Armistead was the top local finisher in the giant slalom on the first day of the CHSAA Alpine ski state championships on Wednesday in Vail. The Battle Mountain skier finished 12th overall.
