Vail Symposium welcomes a panel of top attorneys to discuss impact of major anti-trust cases and monopolies, including Google and Kroger

A monopoly is when one company has a stranglehold on business activity in a particular sector. Anti-trust laws help prevent monopolies from occurring in the market. What does this look like in real life?

No, we’re not discussing the classic board game when we talk about “monopolies” — but the game does illustrate how monopolies work in real life.

On Monday, Feb. 24, at Eagle River Presbyterian Church, join Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser and top antitrust attorneys Logan Breed and John Thorne as Janet McDavid, former Chair of the Antitrust Section of both the American and International Bar, moderates a discussion about modern monopoly and antitrust cases. Learn about the wide-ranging impacts, from where you buy groceries and how you access concert tickets to the default browser on your cell phone and more.

“Sometimes the headlines seem to be following our programming calendar,” said Vail Symposium Executive Director James Kenly. “In addition to stories here in the US and Colorado, this issue impacts the geopolitical landscape via China and Europe as well. This issue affects our lives whether we’re following it or not and we look forward to an interesting discussion between these experts and our community.”

What are the limits of how much of the market a business should be allowed to control and how do today’s modern market economies control the development of monopolies through mergers? What are the public enforcement vs. the defense arguments in diverse cases such as the Kroger-Albertsons merger and the Google Search case? What are the potential harms to customers and the open market? Why do these cases matter, and how do they impact our daily lives?

During this program, the panelists will talk about the Kroger-Albertsons merger and why the State of Colorado is utilized resources to bring the merger about. They will also walk us through the US vs. Google antitrust case and how laws that were first developed in the 1890s are now assessing digital competitiveness and the potential consequences for future tech markets. The speakers will also discuss how the election of Donald Trump and new leadership at the federal antitrust agencies might affect antitrust enforcement.
