School Views: A community partnership for student success

As the final echoes of summer fade and crisp autumn air signals a new beginning, our school community embarks on another transformative academic journey. The transition from leisurely summer days filled with sports camps, family adventures, and poolside relaxation to the structured rhythm of classroom learning presents both opportunities and challenges for our students and families.

While our dedicated educators returned to their classrooms weeks ago, joining the year-round staff members who have been steadily preparing for this moment, our students officially launched into the 2025-26 academic year just last week. Yet physical attendance represents merely the foundation of educational success. True achievement requires a comprehensive partnership between school and home.

Essential administrative tasks

The cornerstone of effective school-home communication lies in maintaining current contact information. We urgently encourage all parents and guardians to complete the annual information update if they have not already done so.

This seemingly simple task proves invaluable when emergency notifications, weather-related closures, or individual student matters require immediate contact with family. Accurate information ensures seamless communication throughout the academic year. Families uncertain about the update process should contact their school’s main office for personalized assistance.

Equally important is familiarizing yourself with our academic calendar (Español). With only 171 instructional days available in the 2025-26 school year, every moment counts. Understanding scheduled breaks, whether for holidays or professional development, enables families to plan effectively and maintain consistent attendance patterns.

As highlighted in my recent column on chronic absenteeism, educational progress relies on physical presence. We cannot effectively teach students who are not consistently in their seats.

Nourishing bodies and minds

Our comprehensive nutrition services deserve recognition for their commitment to culinary diversity and nutritional excellence. From morning breakfast burritos and fresh fruit parfaits to internationally inspired lunch offerings like chicken tikka masala alongside classic favorites such as spaghetti and meatballs, our menu planning reflects both nutritional science and student preferences. We encourage families to review daily menus on our district website to help students anticipate and appreciate their meal options.

Additionally, we strongly urge eligible families to apply for our Free and Reduced Lunch program before the Sept. 26 deadline. While Colorado provides free school meals for all students, qualifying families gain access to our More than a Meal program, which offers fee waivers and supplemental SNAP benefits throughout the year. This confidential application process not only supports individual families financially but also secures additional district funding that enhances educational opportunities for all students.

Streamlined resources and community connection

Our district website serves as your comprehensive resource hub, consolidating essential services including student fee payments, SMARTtag bus registration, and athletic schedules. This digital gateway eliminates administrative obstacles and keeps families informed about every aspect of their student’s educational experience.

As autumn’s arrival ushers in our fall athletic season (volleyball, football, boys soccer, cross-country, boys golf, and more), we invite the entire community to demonstrate its support. Educational success extends far beyond classroom walls, encompassing the character development, teamwork and resilience fostered through extracurricular participation.

Moving forward together

The beginning of each school year represents a fresh opportunity to strengthen the vital partnership between families, educators and community members. By completing administrative tasks, staying informed about school activities, and actively participating in our students’ educational journey, we collectively create an environment where every child can flourish.

Let’s embrace this new academic year with renewed commitment, showing up not just physically but emotionally and intellectually for our students. Together, we will build bridges to success that will support our young people throughout their educational journey and beyond.
