VMS tennis rounding into form for regionals

Chris FreudVail CO, Colorado

DELTA – The Vail Mountain School girls’ tennis team appears to be peaking at the right time. The Gore Rangers had a great weekend in a tournament at Delta, against Slope regional competition which hopefully will be an omen for the real deal in Grand Junction May 4-5.”It was a really good tournament going into regionals,” VMS coach Hillary McSpadden said. “All these teams will be at regionals. I thought overall our team was together and confident. They definitely stepped it up.”At No. 1 and No. 2 singles, Shannen McNamara and Stephanie Miletich, respectively, won their tournaments. Calle Tappe and Beri Bywer finished second in No. 1 doubles. The tandem of Sophie and Claire Sunderland took fifth. At No. 4 doubles, Adi Slifer and Jenna VanDeventer ended up fourth, losing a tight, third-set tiebreaker. With just two spots in each division yielding state berth come May, the Gore Rangers hope to be moving up a few spots in the next two week.”I think quite a few of our girls have an opportunity to place and go to state,” McSpadden said. “I think our doubles’ teams got a good taste of what they’re up against, and definitely know what to work on for the next couple of weeks. They all have the shots. They just need to work on the strategy.”VMS will hone its game with two matches this week. The Gore Rangers are at Evergreen Tuesday and are home at the Homestead Court Club Friday against Aspen at 4 p.m.Sports Editor Chris Freud can be reached at 748-2934 or cfreud@vaildaily.com.Tuesday at Evergreenvs. Aspen Friday.state
