First Fridays at Minturn – a Cake Picnic
Life’s short, so eat dessert first – maybe that phrase is the idea behind the town of Minturn’s First Friday event this week at The Barn, which will feature cake as the main attraction. Community members are encouraged to bring a cake to share and enter it for a chance to win local bragging rights, prizes and recognition from a panel of beloved Minturn celebrity judges. All ages and baking abilities are welcome and there are different categories that will take home the trophy:
- Cutest Cake
- Ugliest Cake
- Youngest Baker
- Oldest Baker
- Most Minturn Cake
Beyond the cake and the competition, attendees can enjoy live music from Dave Andersen, lemonade, picnic-style snacks, kids games and an aerial play zone. This event is free and open to the public from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Cake entries can be registered in advance at thebarnminturn.com.

Last call for skiing and riding at area resorts

Arapahoe Basin
Who knew we’d have multiple snowstorms in April after a warm, dry winter, but those late flakes helped create some more fun on the slopes. But, Arapahoe Basin, the legendary ski area that typically stays open until June and occasionally July 4th or longer, is calling it quits this weekend. Even in an abbreviated year, A-Basin still offers the longest season in Colorado, and they are ready to go out with a bang.
In May, which is also known as May-Basin, late spring is typically a time for less skiing and more time spent cruising around in costumes. So, the ski area is asking revel-goers to wear their favorite May-Basin Day outfit, be it for Swimwear Day, Derby Day, Denim/Jorts Day, May the 4th Day and so on.
Lift tickets are only $39 and there will be beer specials all day at the 6th Alley. On Saturday and Sunday there will be live music from noon-3 p.m. Moonstone Quill takes the stage on Saturday and look for DJ Don Fuego on Sunday. Learn more at arapahoebasin.com.
Copper Mountain
In a year where many resorts closed early, Copper Mountain extended its ski and ride season. The resort that’s just over Vail Pass will close on May 3 and is offering $49 lift tickets from now until the end of its season.
On Friday, the lifts will be open a little later when the resort hosts Party Laps. Ski all day and into the evening when the American Eagle and Excelerator pods spin from 4 -7 p.m. and head to Aerie for DJ tunes before taking a sunset lap down to the base. Aerie is an on-mountain restaurant that opened in 2023 and is situated at the top of the American Eagle lift and offers great views of the Gore and Ten Mile Ranges. Please note that there will be no beginner terrain open at this time. For more information, go to coppercolorado.com.
