For nearly three decades, Greg Sands has helped shape homes and neighborhoods throughout the Eagle River Valley. Today, as owner of GH Sands Construction, he specializes in luxury home renovations, major additions and ground-up custom mountain homes, combining extensive local experience with a reputation for quality craftsmanship, proactive communication and a highly experienced, responsive team.

Greg and his wife, Jackie, moved to the valley in 1998 after falling in love with the mountains during their honeymoon.

“I told Jackie that someday we needed to live here,” Sands recalls. “Five years later we made it happen, and we’ve never looked back.”

Sands began his career with a local custom home builder before expanding into commercial construction, where he managed several significant projects throughout the Vail and Roaring Fork valleys. He later spent more than 16 years leading the custom home division of another respected local builder, overseeing more than 100 luxury custom homes throughout Cordillera, Red Sky Ranch, Arrowhead, Beaver Creek, Bachelor Gulch and surrounding communities.

Those decades of experience gave Sands something many contractors simply can’t offer: firsthand knowledge of how mountain homes are built, renovated and maintained in the unique climate and conditions of the Vail Valley.

A New Chapter

Following the pandemic, Sands spent four years serving as an owner’s representative, helping homeowners manage complex construction projects from planning through completion. His work included luxury residential projects throughout Colorado and one of the country’s most distinctive resort destinations, Amangiri in southern Utah.

That experience ultimately reinforced what he enjoyed most.

“I realized I wanted to be back building,” Sands said. “About three years ago I launched GH Sands Construction, and it’s been exciting to build a company around the values I’ve always believed in.”

Today, GH Sands Construction focuses primarily on luxury renovations, major additions and large scale remodels, while continuing to build select custom homes.

Specialists in Luxury Renovations

Many of the valley’s second homes eventually require substantial updates.

“A client may start thinking they just want a new kitchen,” Sands said. “Then it becomes new bathrooms, flooring, structural changes, updated mechanical systems and outdoor living spaces. Before long it’s a complete renovation, and that’s exactly the type of project we enjoy.”

The company also completes additions, exterior renovations and structural repairs. Recent work has included replacing failing deck systems, whole-home remodels and comprehensive renovations throughout the valley’s premier communities.

A Proven Team Approach

Over the past two years, Sands has assembled a carefully selected leadership team to support every phase of a project. GH Sands Construction includes experienced project management, field supervision, financial leadership and administrative support, creating an experienced management structure that allows projects to be managed efficiently from preconstruction through completion.

“We’ve been very intentional about building the right team,” Sands said. “We want to grow organically, not just get bigger. Our goal is to provide every client with exceptional communication, attention to detail and a consistent experience throughout the project.”

The company’s project manager works closely with Sands during budgeting, planning and subcontractor coordination, while experienced field superintendents oversee daily construction activities, quality control and communication with homeowners and trade partners. The result is a collaborative approach that keeps projects organized, accountable and moving forward.

Communication Drives Successful Projects

Most new clients come through referrals from previous homeowners, architects and interior designers—a reflection of relationships developed over nearly three decades in the valley. “That referral-based business is something we’re proud of”, Sands said.

Projects typically begin with developing the scope of work, establishing a realistic budget and coordinating design before construction begins.

“One of the biggest challenges today is product availability and long lead times,” Sands said. “The earlier we begin planning, the smoother the project goes. Good communication at the beginning saves time, money and frustration later.”

Quality Comes First

Whether managing a kitchen remodel or a whole-home renovation, Sands believes the same principles apply.

“We’re detail-oriented, we’re proactive and we believe communication is just as important as craftsmanship,” he said. “Our clients are making a significant investment in their homes, and they deserve a builder who treats that investment with the same care they do. We enjoy working with homeowners who value thoughtful planning, transparent communication and exceptional craftsmanship on luxury renovation and custom home projects”

Nearly three decades after arriving in the valley, Greg Sands continues doing what first brought him here—helping homeowners create exceptional mountain homes built to last for generations.
