Hawkins, Colorado agree to contract extension

BOULDER, Colorado “-Colorado football coach Dan Hawkins and the university have agreed to a contract extension that will keep him with the Buffaloes through 2012.

Hawkins is in his third year at Colorado, with an 11-19 and a berth in the Independence Bowl last season. The Buffaloes are 3-2 in 2008.

The new contract was announced Tuesday. It takes effect on July 1.

Hawkins originally signed a five-year, $4.25 million contract, not including incentives, that was to run through Dec. 31, 2010.

Hawkins can earn incentives for such things as making it to the Big 12 Conference championship game, winning league and national titles, playing in bowl games and being named conference or national coach of the year.
