Project Funway

Carly Wick models her design she created with Katie Shepard entitled “2025: The Year of the Snake,” which won Best in Show at Project Funway last year. The event happens this Saturday at Grand Hyatt Vail and it benefits the Education Foundation of Eagle County (EFEC).

One of the most creative fundraisers in the Vail Valley is Project Funway — a fashion show where the designers are asked to make outfits out of anything but fabric. Over the past 14 years, the event has evolved and each year brings in designs that wow the crowd. From outfits made out of duct tape to hockey sticks, silverware to pickleball nets, you never know what people will come up with but it is always amazing and jaw-dropping.

This fabric-less fashion show benefits the Education Foundation of Eagle County (EFEC). The mission of this grassroots nonprofit is to support local students and teachers, filling a gap created by a shortage of funding. By buying tickets, bidding on auction items or participating in the fashion show, you are helping out our local schools. It’s fitting that this event involves the youth of Eagle County with two of the three categories: youth ages 12 and under and teens ages 13-18. The adults have so much fun creating designs too, so there is a category for those ages 19 and older. Prizes will be awarded in each category and for Best in Show.

The Education Foundation of Eagle County has hosted Project Funway at Dobson Arena the last several years, but due to the renovation of that space, the event has been moved to Grand Hyatt Vail. But don’t worry, the high energy factor will still be present at the new venue.

Returning once again will be the celebrity judges, including Mondo Guerra who was the runner-up on “Project Runway” and won “Project Runway All Stars” during season 1.

The event starts at 5:30 p.m. and is a ton of fun and a treat for the whole family to see all the creativity. For ticket and event information go to projectfunway.org.

Family fun at Beaver Creek

The Beaver Creek Family Fun Fair on Saturday is just one of the many activities going on during spring break. Look for Root Beer Float tastings, dance parties, college basketball tournament watch parties and more.

Beaver Creek has amped up the family programming to ensure families have a good time on and off the hill.

Don’t forget to come off the hill at 3 p.m. for Cookie Time, where the Beaver Creek staff dress up in white chef hats and coats and hand out warm chocolate chip cookies. After that, head to the ice rink, which is open daily from noon until 9 p.m. for skating in the heart of the plaza. There are several free events kids can participate in throughout the weekend:

Friday:

  • Complimentary caricatures with Ken Carpenter – 3-5 p.m.
  • DJ at Hooked from 3-5 p.m.

Saturday:

  • Family Fun Fest – 3:30-5 p.m.

Sunday:

  • Birds of Prey raptor education presentation by Nature’s Educators – 2-4 p.m.

At Hawk’s Nest Cabin, a fun place to go for the older kids, you’ll find mocktails, a dance floor, ski simulator, arcade games and more. There are also special programs going on this week:

Friday:

  • Root beer tasting and root beer float making — 2-4 p.m. — a fun, flavor-filled afternoon at Hawk’s Nest Cabin where you can sample three unique root beers and choose your favorite to build the perfect float for $7.
  • DJ Night with DJ Lil Dipz — 7-9 p.m. — dance on the LED floor to a live DJ set and enjoy games, interactive zones and plenty of space to chill between songs—all designed exclusively for ages 10–18.

Saturday and Sunday:

  • College basketball watch parties — Round of 32: 4-8 p.m. — Come to Hawk’s Nest Cabin for evening college basketball viewing as the tournament heats up. Enjoy the games on the big screen in a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere that’s perfect for families looking to catch the excitement together.

Ski and Tee

Eagle Ranch Golf Club is open for business. The warmer weather and lower snowfall amounts have allowed Eagle Ranch Golf Club and Gypsum Creek Golf Course to open up in March.

There’s a few rare times where you can play a traditionally summer sport like golf with a winter sport like skiing or snowboarding. We like to call that Ski and Tee, where you ski in the morning and golf in the afternoon, or vice versa. It normally doesn’t happen until later in the season. But with Gypsum Creek Golf Course in Gypsum open since March 3 and Eagle Ranch Golf Club now open, it’s time to get two sports done during one day.

At Eagle Ranch Golf Club, all 18 holes and the practice facility and driving range will be open as well as our Eagle Ranch Grille starting Friday. Carts are available but it will be cart path only for early season until the grass comes out of dormancy. Check eagleranchgolf.com for more details.

Head on down to Gypsum Creek but do make tee times in advance by using the app or by visiting gypsumcreekgolf.com.
