Police were active at the Tarnes on Bachelor Gulch Trail early Friday, April 26, responding to a report of an armed barricade. Just before 10 a.m., the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office reported that the armed suspect was taken into custody after four hours.

Eagle County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded around 4:30 a.m. to reports that a man was actively threatening people with a gun at The Tarnes.

Soon after deputies arrived on scene, the Special Operations Unit was called in, and the entire area was evacuated as a precaution. Other entities including the Avon Police Department, Vail Police Department, Beaver Creek Public Safety, ECO Transit, the Vail Public Safety Communications team and Eagle County Paramedic Services provided support during the incident.

Those in the room with the man were able to escape unharmed, and deputies were able to determine it was not a hostage situation. While initial reports from the sheriff’s office indicated that the suspect was a resident of the Tarnes, at noon on Friday, the department clarified the suspect was a guest and not a resident.

Multiple attempts were made to negotiate with the suspect via phone as well as repeated announcements made by police.

Police used a drone with infrared technology and a breaching robot to resolve the situation peacefully.

The suspect is now in custody and the sheriff’s office reported there is no longer any threat in the area.
