Top guy at EVHS

Cindy Ramunno

In the top four of his class, Eagle Valley High School senior Derek Fawcett stands as the only boy with the others. Dianne Mayne, Johanna Moch and Kim Smith surround him, but he can say he’s the top guy academically. And when Fawcett walks up to receive his diploma from principal Nelson Gould on graduation day, he should be proud.

Fawcett attended middle school at the Eagle County Charter Academy and lives in Eagle with his parents and younger sister, Kristen. He participated in hockey, soccer, DADD, Student Council and the National Honor Society. What it his goal to be in the top four?

“I just always did as well as I could,” says Fawcett.

A common theme that comes up when talking with Fawcett’s friends and teachers in the halls at EVHS is that he is incredibly easy to get along with. Friends consistently said that he has wonderful people skills.

Fawcett heads to Boulder this fall to attend the University of Colorado. He will be getting his degree in Engineering with a minor in Business. But before that, there’s summer. He plans to have some fun, but mostly work.

“I’ll work for Eagle County facilities management,” he says. He also will be wakeboarding and water skiing in his spare time this summer.

Besides being well-liked, Fawcett is also known for his incredible skills in hockey. He says the will miss those peers next year, but is looking forward to living in Boulder. He plans on playing club hockey or soccer at the school next year.

“I haven’t decided which sport to pursue yet,” he says.

Fawcett’s advice for younger students is “be yourself and be the best you can be.”
