Prep notebook: Battle Mountain girls golf captures individual and team wins at Gypsum Creek

Battle Mountain senior Makena Thayer won the Gypsum Creek Tournament on April 7, 2026. Thayer shot a 73 to win the individual crown by nine strokes as the Huskies claimed the team title as well.

The Battle Mountain girls golf team won the Gypsum Creek Tournament on Tuesday over a 13-team field consisting of 2A, 3A and 4A squads. Battle Mountain recorded a team score of 291 strokes to finish one shot ahead of Steamboat Springs and three strokes clear of Palisade.

Senior Makena Thayer led the way, carding a 1-over 73 to win the individual crown by nine strokes. While Thayer started her day with a double-bogey on the 11th hole and shot 39 on the back nine to open, she recorded three birdies on the front nine to close out the afternoon.

Keena Shikverg (108) and Ruby Enyart (110) rounded out Battle Mountain’s scoring.



Eagle Valley placed sixth as a team, led by Claire Walker’s 96. The freshman birdied the par-3 17th hole and wound up tied for sixth in the 65-athlete field. Julia Borejszo shot a 103 and Teegan Terbush shot 113 for Eagle Valley as well.

Other prep notes: Freshmen lead Huskies to victory over Tigers

  • Olivia Goldberg scored two goals and fellow freshman Emily Sosa pitched in another score to lead Battle Mountain to a 3-1 win over Summit on Tuesday in Breckenridge. The No. 9-ranked Huskies improved to 8-2 on the year and 4-0 in league play heading into Saturday’s match against No. 18 Pueblo West.
  • Eagle Valley gave up three second-half goals to Glenwood Springs in a 5-2 road loss on Tuesday. Priscila Rico scored both Devils’ goals, with one assist coming from Gabi Littlepage. Eagle Valley (3-6) hosts Palisade (2-5) on Thursday.
  • The Vail Christian boys volleyball team lost a tight match to Alameda 20-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-18 on Monday to fall to 3-8 on the year. The Saints are back in action on Saturday at home against D’Evelyn.
  • The No. 11-ranked Battle Mountain boys lacrosse team won its fourth-straight game on Monday with a 20-8 win over Green Mountain. Finn Lunde led the way with six goals. Asher Leonard added five goals and two assists and Carter Shonk recorded a hat trick and a pair of assists in the victory as well. Battle Mountain (6-2) faces Fruita Monument (3-3) on Thursday.
  • The No. 1-ranked Battle Mountain girls lacrosse team stayed undefeated with a 21-3 win over Summit on Tuesday. The Huskies used a balanced attack against the Tigers, with 11 different players showing up in the scoresheet. Kate Kovacik led the way with four goals and three assists as Battle Mountain improved to 8-0 on the year.
