Prep notebook: Battle Mountain boys lacrosse defeats No. 1-ranked Telluride in overtime

Battle Mountain came back from a 7-3 halftime deficit to defeat No. 1-ranked Telluride 12-11 in overtime on Tuesday at a neutral site. The Huskies scored five goals in the fourth quarter to tie things up.
Carter Shonk — who scored the game-winning goal against the Miners in the state quarterfinals two years ago — led Battle Mountain with six goals. Asher Leonard pitched in three to go along with two assists and seven ground balls while Finn Lunde, Teagan Larsen and Logan Roach also put the ball in the back of the net.

Champ McNair went 15-for-19 on faceoffs for Battle Mountain, which has now won three games in a row after dismantling Summit 19-2 on Thursday. Battle Mountain (5-2) climbed to the 13th spot in the latest CHSAA Selection & Seeding Index while Telluride (8-2) fell to No. 5. Undefeated Lutheran (6-0) is No. 1 in 4A.
Other prep notes: Vail Mountain School girls soccer wins big over Coal Ridge
- Solveig Moritz scored four goals and Mari Renick added another score to lead Vail Mountain School past Coal Ridge 5-0 on Thursday. Moritz and Renick each had an assist in the game as well, as did Isla Elton, Annie Halloran and Weston Phillips. The Rangers improved to 3-2 on the year and will host Rifle on April 9.
- The Vail Christian boys volleyball team dropped a five-setter to STEM School Highlands Ranch on Thursday to fall to 2-7 on the year. The Spartans defeated the Saints 25-14, 23-25, 26-24, 25-18, 15-11 to improve to 5-5.
- Battle Mountain senior Makena Thayer made three birdies en route to a 79 to place third out of 85 golfers at the Devil’s Thumb Invitational on Tuesday in Delta. The Huskies finished sixth as a team as Caleigh Kackman (100) and Belen Hahn (114) rounded out the team scoring. Eagle Valley was eight strokes back in eighth, led by Claire Walker, who shot a 96 to place 19th. Julia Borejszo (99) and Ella Weisberger (106) rounded out the Devil’s scoring three. Steamboat Springs senior Katharina Cosby won the individual crown with a 76 as Durango’s Jayden Craig (78) took runner-up honors. Eagle Valley hosts the Gypsum Creek Tournament on April 7 beginning at 11 a.m.

- Vail Christian girls tennis won its sixth-straight dual match on Thursday. The Saints went 6-1 against Thompson Valley. Vail Christian swept Glenwood Springs and Steamboat Springs on March 12 and 13, respectively, defeated Aspen 6-1 on March 26 and swept Dawson School the following day.
