Ceremony for Vail’s new Checkpoint Charlie Wednesday

VAIL, Colorado – The town of Vail will host a ribbon cutting ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, to celebrate the opening of the rebuilt Checkpoint Charlie building on Gore Creek Drive in Vail Village. Mayor Dick Cleveland will be on hand with hot chocolate and donuts.

The building will be staffed by police department representatives from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily with information on loading and delivery, vehicle access and tips for guests.

Checkpoint Charlie has served as a traffic monitoring and information outpost for residents and guests since the 1970s. The new structure is designed to fit better with the alpine ambiance of Vail Village – and also has a public restroom.

A video monitoring system also has been installed to better enforce loading and delivery operations. The new building was funded and constructed by Vail Resorts Development Co. to fulfill requirements tied to the Mountain Plaza project.
