Law enforcement agencies across Eagle County will participate in the Drug Enforcement Administration National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 26.

Local personnel will be on-site and will host collection sites from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the following locations:

  • Vail Police Department: Vail Municipal Building
  • Avon Police Department: Walmart
  • Eagle County Sheriff’s Office and Eagle Police Department: City Market Eagle
  • Carbondale Police Department: Carbondale Town Hall

For more than a decade, this event has helped Americans easily rid their homes of unneeded medications — those that are old, unwanted or expired — that too often become a gateway to addiction.

This is an opportunity to clean out your medicine cabinets of tablets, capsules, patches and other solid forms of prescription drugs. The service is free and anonymous, with no questions asked.

Collection sites will not accept syringes, sharps and illicit drugs. Liquid products, such as cough syrup, should remain sealed in their original container. The cap must be tightly sealed to prevent leakage.

Eagle County Household Hazardous Waste offers a collection program for Eagle County residents that accepts sharps and needles for a $10 disposal fee. For more information, call 970-328-3463.

The nationwide Take Back Day in October 2024 brought in 314 tons of medications. This brings the total amount of prescription drugs collected by the DEA since the fall of 2010 to more than 19 million pounds of medication.
