VAIL — The constant flow of creativity that inspires an artist to explore and create with various materials is what makes evolution such an intrinsic part of an artist’s journey. James Jensen has tackled and mastered almost every medium and approach in the art world. In his contemporary works, Jensen has found inspiration in combining materials such as wood, gold leaf, oil, acrylic, fabrics and various methods to achieve texture.
Distressed Metal
Jensen will bring his latest body of work using distressed metal to Masters Gallery in Vail Village today and Saturday from 3 to 7 p.m.
“Since the Industrial Revolution, we have been surrounded by industrial materials that have become mundane — steel, iron, stone, wood — these are materials that define our times,” Jensen said. “Painting surfaces are where we start in the arts. Canvas, wood and now metal.

“Cold, hard steel is industrial, modern. When paint hits the steel, there is now color and warmth, splashes of pigment pushed and pulled over the metal surface are caught in moments of aggravation and finally coerced into compositions that are like the winning of a battle. I love the combination of the stubborn steel and the liquid paint. … Cool meets hot.”
