Sally January has always been a big fan of hats. The owner of Alpine Kind in Beaver Creek and Minturn has quite the selection in both locations. From ball caps with catchy phrases on them to beanies and hats made of wool and palm fronds, hats have always been a part of the fashion equation.
But at her new hat bar, Alpine Hats, you get to create your own look.
“My concept at the Beaver Creek and Minturn stores is very outdoorsy and not very feminine or fancy, so I feel like this is my other side that I get to kind of play around with this new type of store,” January said.
Look for Alpine Hats just a few stores away from Alpine Kind on the plaza level of Beaver Creek Village. You’ll find the hat bar where you choose your hat and the base price comes with three accessories. From there, you can add on if you want to create more flair. Hat bands, charms, vintage accessories, leather cording, silk fabric, branding and burning personalized images, wording, significant dates and more can all be a part of your stylized lid.

January sources her hats from Carrie Calvin who owns Sunward Studio in Gypsum.

“She has all these super cool machines where she can laser engrave and put designs onto hats. She has hats custom-made and manufactured for her. She also makes and designs all of our hat bands that we’ll be selling in the hat bar,” January said. “Anything from fun leather hat bands that have old bullet shell casings in them or bright-colored bands made from Pendleton fabrics. All hats run around $200 and that includes three accessories and then you can add on an upgrade with more accessories.”

January wants this to be different than just a shopping trip. She aims to have it be more of an experience shared with others.
“I’d love to bring in groups, whether it is a bridal party, a girls trip, a corporate group and we can even do a buyout where you have the whole boutique to yourself and everyone can pick and choose their accessories and have a great time together and create some memories,” January said. She also wants everyone to know this isn’t a place just for the gals — men are welcome, too.
“All of our hats are unisex and come in a variety of colors and we’re carrying every hat in a size small, medium and large so that men can do this,” January said.
In addition to hats, Alpine Hats will offer a fine goods bar with fragrance options, barware, gifts and jewelry.
“The jewelers we are working with are all small, up-and-coming artists. One that we’re super excited to work with is called Common Form out of Bozeman, Montana. This brand works with lots of natural elements, including some fun elevated jewelry that’s made out of porcupine quills, solid gold and turquoise, which is pretty unique and special,” January said.
Another brand, Lacee Alexandra Jewelry, of Long Beach, California, creates simple, solid gold and diamond star-based jewelry resembling the North Star. San Francisco’s Ofina makes chunkier, heavier gold jewelry that has elements of emeralds and pearls and trendy pieces that are very similar to what is carried in Alpine Kind, but all made out of solid gold.
“We wanted to keep items at a decent price point for what you’re getting for the quality of the pieces,” January said.

The website is up and ready to take appointments if you want to schedule a party or special event but make your plans now — Alpine Hats will only be open until Labor Day.
“We are in the space that housed Epic Mountain Gear, so we have this location from Memorial Day until Labor Day,” January said. Alpine Hats is open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and for more information go to AlpineKind.com and click on Alpine Hats.
