Romanian ensemble features pianist Makiko Hirata

Special to the Daily Japanese pianist Makiko Hirata will join Philharmonic Orchestra of Arad, Romania, today at 6:30 p.m. at the Vilar Center in Beaver Creek.

BEAVER CREEK – In existence since 1883, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Arad, Romania, possesses one of the largest music libraries in the country. The ensemble performs more than 30 times during its regular season from October to June in major venues, historic churches and open-air coliseums throughout Romania. The Orchestra brings its strings to the Vilar Center at 6:30 p.m. today.Pianist Makiko Hirata will join the ensemble tonight. She is an award-winning alumna of the Juilliard School. She is a native of Kanagawa, Japan, where she began her studies at the age of 3. In December 1998, Hirata’s official New York City debut at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall was received with a standing ovation. She currently holds the position of adjunct faculty member at the Music Theory Department of New York University. Conductor Dorin Frandes attended the prestigious Gheorghe Dima Academy of Music studying with Maestro Emil Simon and later the Franz Liszt Academy of Music with Russian Maestro Arwid Jahnson. He has been the conductor of the Philharmonic of Arad since 1987 and general managing director since 1992. He has toured around the world with the philharmonic and has been invited as guest conductor of several symphony orchestras around Europe. The International Biographical Centre of Cambridge, England, nominated Frandes as “International Man of the Year in 1998.”
