On Sept. 30, the entire Vail Christian High School community of over 150 students and 20 faculty dropped everything to serve local nonprofit organizations for the day through the school’s Saints PLuS program.

The days of service are called Saints PLuS days, named for Vail Christian’s mascot and the motivating slogan behind the volunteering effort. PLuS stands for Purpose, Leadership and Service, with “you” (u) in the middle.

“Purpose is the reason each of us is placed on planet earth, or perhaps it’s our calling,” said Steve O’Neil, head of school. “I want to see each of our students explore and begin to discover his or her purpose.

“With service, I want to see our students follow the example of Jesus who said, ‘I did not come to be served, but to serve,” O’Neil said. “As for leadership, it’s simply ‘influence’. I want to see our students, and one day alumni, positively ‘influence’ the world to make it better, wherever God places them.”

The Saints PLuS days began in 2024 with international service trips. This year, the focus is on engaging with local community organizations. This fall, organizers wanted students to be outside as much as possible and sought local nonprofits and churches that desired to have students volunteer with them.
