Vail Daily letter: Successful cemetery tour
Eagle County Historical Society board of director
The success of the Eagle County Historical Society’s tour of the Gypsum cemetery can be attributed to many sources.
Historical society members spent months in the Eagle Public Library researching archives and old newspapers. Archivist Jaci Spuhler was always there to lend a helping hand and point us in the direction of useful information or relevant photos.
The actors and interpreters who cheerfully spent a long day in the cemetery telling the stories of Gypsum’s pioneers made history come to life. Many thanks to the Porchlight Players (Kris Keys, Terri Vroman, Rudy Olin, Jessica Kline, Lucinda Hanle and Dacia Belisle Woodworth) and to Sara Fisher, Brian Hall and Bill Heicher for their hard work.
Ed Oyler brought a big smile and his horses and wagon to take the actors through the parade. Colorado Mountain Express generously donated the use of a van throughout the day to shuttle people through the cemetery.
The congregation of the First Lutheran Church lent their historic property for our tour sign-ups; and the High Altitude Quilt Guild filled the church with beautiful quilts for people to look at while awaiting the tour.

Support Local Journalism
The town of Gypsum’s generous financial support made it possible for us to offer the tour free of charge. The town also provided lunch for the cemetery tour volunteers and tents at the cemetery and church. Town employees Danette Schlegel and Valerie Nelson helped us throughout the day.
We appreciate all of the people who helped us create a fun, lively local history lesson.
