Vail Legacy Weekend

Vail Legacy Weekend returns and this year marks the 81st anniversary of when the soldiers from the famed 10th Mountain Division — the winter warfare unit in the U.S. Army that trained south of Vail at Camp Hale — fought pivotal battles in the Apennine Mountains in Italy and surprised the Nazi forces with a night attack on Feb. 18-19, 1945. Come out and celebrate the soldiers who came back and shaped much of the ski and outdoor industry into what we know it as today. Vail Mountain and Epic Promise, Discover Vail, and the modern-day 10th Mountain Division from Fort Drum, New York are putting on this event.

On Saturday and Sunday, there are many ways you can take part in the festivities, whether it’s the DJs playing up at The 10th Restaurant, the on-mountain eatery named after this famed group of military heroes. You can watch members of the modern-day 10th Mountain Division, Colorado National Guard and veterans ski down from the top of Vail Mountain near Mountaintop Express (No. 4) and the Legacy Hut to Riva Ridge, a run named after a famous battle in Italy. There will also be live music in the afternoons at Express Lift Café with the 10th Mountain Division Band and local performers, The Fabulous Femmes. There will be a torchlight ski down parade followed by fireworks and a march down Bridge Street to a reception at 10th Mountain Whiskey and Spirits Company’s tasting room and a Blackhawk Helicopter landing on the top of Vail Mountain. To see a full schedule, go to the Events Calendar at Vail.com.

Manor Vail Lodge is getting into the spirit of things and celebrating Vail’s heritage alongside its own milestone of celebrating 60 years this season. Stop by the hotel on Friday between 4-7 p.m. for a cozy reception featuring a cheese and fondue station alongside Colorado alpine cheese and charcuterie. Toast to the legacy of Vail with Old World Wines from the European Alps, hosted by Manor Vail’s in-house sommelier.

In addition to what Vail Mountain has scheduled, stop by the Colorado Snowsports Museum. Here you will find the most comprehensive exhibit in the world with artifacts, displays, stories and photos about this amazing group and its contribution to not only the outcome of WW II, but also the outdoor industry. The museum is open daily from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and on Saturday night after the torchlight ski-down parade, the museum will stay open until 8 p.m. For more information, go to SnowsportsMuseum.org.

The Vail Recreation District will host the inaugural Tony O’Rourke Memorial Snowshoe Shuffle on Sunday at 10 a.m. in Beaver Creek. This new 5K and 10K snowshoe race honors longtime Beaver Creek Resort Company executive director Tony O’Rourke, who helped launch the beloved Beaver Creek Snowshoe Series years ago. The race begins at Creekside Park on the Beaver Creek Golf Course, with aid stations, age-group awards and a post-race celebration featuring coffee, hot chocolate and food. A portion of proceeds will benefit Starting Hearts.

O’Rourke moved to the Vail Valley in 1996 and quickly immersed himself in the mountain lifestyle. During his 14 years leading Beaver Creek Resort Company, he helped grow the valley’s endurance sports scene, launching the Snowshoe Adventure Series and supporting major events like the Ultra 100 Mountain Bike Race and TransRockies Run. Tony passed away in 2023, but his passion for outdoor adventure and community lives on through this event, which brings people together to celebrate snowshoeing and the outdoors.

Limited free snowshoe rentals will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants will receive a free sticker commemorating the first year of this event. All racers are entered into a raffle with prizes from local and national sponsors. For more information and to sign up, visit VailRec.com.

On Saturday, treat the kids to an entertaining show that introduces them to British sensation Peppa Pig when the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek hosts “Peppa Pig – My First Concert.” The Peppa Pig character is part of the cast of a British preschool animated children’s television series. Join Peppa Pig, Mummy and Daddy Pig and George as they introduce you to musical instruments and a live orchestra. Even the littlest listeners as young at 18 months will enjoy the action on stage and the music that accompanies it.

The program ranges from classical Mozart to fun music from the animated series. Peppa’s favorite thing to do is jump in muddle puddles, so, naturally there is a song about that. A meet-and-greet after the show is also available for kids to interact and take photos with the characters, get a plush toy and more. Before the show starts, the audience will see how the orchestra warms up and see some of the handheld instruments up close. During the performance, kids will be asked to participate in the show by singing along and dancing.

The show begins at 6 p.m. and the lobby opens at 5 p.m. There is special pricing for children and this show is part of the Ticket 4-Pack, so take advantage of the savings. For more information, go to VilarPAC.org.
