The Vail Town Council will review year one of its summer paid parking program and consider what to do in year two on Tuesday.

The town staff is proposing the structures use a similar format to last summer, with rates remaining $2/hour, $10 max per day, and free entry after 3 p.m.

As the first year in the town’s history to see parking fees when the ski season was not in session, summer 2025 saw its share of criticism for the move. Amid complaints of squeezing a few more bucks out of locals and visitors, the summer parking program fell short of projected revenues as well.

The summer parking program was introduced to generate long-term funding for the town’s effort to maintain and preserve its aging parking structures, an effort that is projected to cost $2 million annually. Additional revenues were also earmarked to support expanded summer transit services, estimated at $500,000 per year.

Changes proposed for this year include some concessions to Eagle County locals, including not differentiating between Vail and Eagle County residents with different passes and instead creating a single “Local Pass,” priced at $40, which would allow for three hours of free parking in the Vail and Lionshead parking garages.

Hourly rates with the Local Pass are proposed to be $1 per hour, capped at $5.

Overnight parking fees in Vail Village and Lionshead would be reduced compared to last summer, while Red Sandstone would maintain a lower overnight rate.

Event parking at Ford Park and Vail Athletic Fields would remain at $20, with free parking incentives for carpools of four or more people.

Other pass options would range from $150 for employee passes to $1,200 for premier passes, with varying levels of access across parking facilities. The $1,200 option would have free parking everywhere, with the $150 employee option offering free parking in Lionshead.

A partnership with a local bike-share system offering short, free rides for pass holders has been proposed as well.

The Town Council will discuss the parking plan during its regular meeting on Tuesday.

Town staff has recommended the council approve the plan, with or without modifications, to ensure the program is in place before peak summer visitation begins.

The summer parking season is proposed to run from May 29 through September 27.

The Vail Town Council’s regular evening meeting on Tuesday is set to begin at 6 p.m. at the Vail Town Hall, located at 75 N. Frontage Road.
