The driver of an RTD bus involved in a Saturday accident that killed two people and injured many others faces 13 misdemeanor charges – but no felony charges.

On Saturday, a bus operated by 30-year-old Tideneykiyalesh Hawari yat of Aurora, a driver for Veolia Transportation, a private provider of transit service for RTD, ran through a red light at East Eighth Avenue and Lincoln Street in Denver, according to witnesses, hitting two other vehicles.

That accident was followed by an unrelated fatality Monday in Aurora in which an RTD bus hit a pedestrian and, late Tuesday, yet another serious accident in Lafayette, in which a 43-year-old cyclist was airlifted to Denver Health Medical Center after a collision with another RTD bus.

The cyclist was not wearing a helmet and his condition was unknown. Lafayette Police Sgt. Fred Palmer said the collision occurred about 9:45 p.m. near the park-n-Ride on South Public Road.

Palmer said it was too early to say whether that bus driver would be charged.

Earlier Tuesday evening, Lt. Matt Murray, a Denver police spokesman, said that Hawariyat has been charged with 11 counts of careless driving resulting in serious bodily injury and two counts of careless driving resulting in death in connection with Saturday’s accident.
